16 years old is peak risk for teens misusing prescription drugs

Tuesday, May 8, 2012

The peak risk for misusing prescription pain relievers occurs in mid-adolescence, specifically about 16 years old and earlier than many experts thought, according to a new study by Michigan State University researchers.

The results, based on recent nationwide surveys of nearly 120,000 U.S. adolescents, suggest prevention programs may need to be introduced earlier, in childhood and early adolescence, said James C. Anthony of MSU's Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics.

Recent trends show clinicians and public health professionals are prescribing more pain relievers, and research suggests an increased misuse of these drugs and increased rates of overdose deaths, said Anthony, who supervised the research of postdoctoral fellow Elizabeth Meier and graduate student Jonathan Troost.

"While much of the previous thinking was that misuse of these drugs emerged in the final year of high school and during the college-age years, we found that for adolescents the peak risk of starting to misuse these painkillers generally occurs earlier, not during the postsecondary school years," Anthony said. "We suspect many physicians, other prescribing clinicians and public health professionals, will share our surprise in this finding."

The study, supported by grants from the National Institute on Drug Abuse and MSU, was published today in the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, a network publication of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

The team of researchers analyzed data from the 2004 through 2008 National Surveys on Drug Use and Health to identify when young people are most likely to start using prescription pain relievers to get high or for other unapproved uses. The results show about 1 in 60 young people between 12 and 21 years old starts using prescription pain relievers each year, outside the boundaries of what a prescriber has intended.

Peak risk is concentrated at about 16 years, when roughly 1 in 30 to 40 youth start to use painkillers to get high, or for other reasons not intended by the prescriber.

"Getting a firm grasp of when the first onset occurs is very important when we try to take public health action to prevent first occurrence," Anthony said. "With the peak risk at age 16 years and a notable acceleration in risk between ages 13 and 14 years, any strict focus on college students or 12th graders might be an example of too little too late."

The results reveal a need to strengthen prescribing guidelines for clinicians and introduce early school-based prevention programs such as effective school-based alcohol and tobacco initiatives, he said.

Other types of prevention programs include peer-resistance programs such as the popular "Just Say No" campaigns. There also is an opportunity to work with pharmaceutical specialists who sometimes can reformulate these drugs so their effects are blunted when misused.

As for clinicians with a public health perspective, Anthony said that non-opioid pain relievers such as ibuprofen can be quite effective, and that when opioid pain killers are prescribed for adolescents or in reach of teens, the number of tablets can be limited or kept under lock and key.

"Patients in transient pain are often given a larger opioid prescription than is needed. It can end up stacked in the medicine cabinet, available to anyone in or visiting the household," he said.

Samsung Galaxy S III gets a Canadian girlfriend as Bell, Rogers, Telus, Wind Mobile line up

Image

If you live north of the 49th parallel, you're no doubt frustrated that Samsung teased a summer launch for the Galaxy S III in North America but made no initial mention of its Canadian plans. Don't fret, as virtually every Canadian carrier and its mother has now pledged to carry the giant Android 4.0 smartphone while you're on your summer vacation -- the first carrier commitments in North America that we've seen. Bell, Rogers, Telus, Virgin Mobile and Wind Mobile have all stepped up as national providers, while regional carriers such as SaskTel and Videotron have also signed on. The Galaxy S III is a special milestone for Virgin, as it's the first 4G LTE phone on the Bell-run budget network. We're still waiting for Mobilicity and other cellular services to hop on the Galaxy S III bandwagon, and details like pricing and exact ship dates are still elusive, but odds are that Canucks will have a wide choice of carriers when the 4.8-inch flagship hits stores. Update: Sure enough, Mobilicity is also onboard, which along with Wind Mobile makes it pretty clear that T-Mobile-friendly AWS frequencies are baked in.

Male college students believe taking performance-enhancing drugs for sports is more unethical than using stimulants to improve grades

ScienceDaily (May 8, 2012) ? In the eyes of young college men, it's more unethical to use steroids to get an edge in sports than it is to use prescription stimulants to enhance one's grades, according to new research published by the American Psychological Association.

And students who had themselves used stimulants without a prescription were more inclined to see such drug use as acceptable, according to the findings, which were published online in the APA journal Psychology of Addictive Behaviors. This is one of the first studies to compare perceptions of off-label prescription drug use with perceptions of steroids performance enhancers.

"This is consistent with the idea that using performance enhancers is viewed as less ethical in the sporting world than in the academic world," said the study's lead author, Tonya Dodge, PhD, of George Washington University. "Interestingly, the students in our study considered off-label prescription drug use as more effective for success than using steroids."

Approximately 1,200 college freshmen (73 percent white) at Pennsylvania State University answered a questionnaire that presented two scenarios. One described "Bill," a sprinter for his college track team who does not have a lot of time to train before the championship meet and is worried he won't be able to improve. He gets steroids from a friend and ends up performing better than expected and wins the championship race.

The second scenario presents "Jeff," a college student facing midterm exams who is worried that his grades in class may be low. He doesn't have much time to study so he gets some Adderall, a prescription stimulant, from a friend who tells him it will help him focus at exam time. Jeff takes the pills and ends up getting better midterm grades than he expected.

After reading both scenarios, the students were asked how strongly they agreed or disagreed with four statements: "Bill/Jeff is a cheater for using steroids/Adderall," and, "Taking steroids/Adderall was necessary for Bill/Jeff to do well."

The students were also asked if they had ever misused prescription stimulant drugs, such as Adderall, Ritalin or Dexedrine, or if they had ever used steroids. Less than 1 percent of the sample reported having ever used steroids while about 8 percent said they had misused prescription stimulants in the last 12 months. This compares to 8 percent to 34 percent of college students who have reported misusing prescription stimulants and 1.5 percent of adolescents and young adults who have misused anabolic steroids.

The researchers also asked the men if they had played a sport in high school to determine if that would affect their judgments.

Participants significantly rated Bill, the steroid user, as more of a cheater than Jeff, the prescription drug user. This difference got bigger if the students reported having misused prescription stimulants themselves in the past or if they had played a sport.

Overall, the students were more likely to consider Jeff's Adderall use more necessary to succeed than Bill's steroid use regardless of whether they had misused prescription stimulants in the past or had played a sport. "One reason students may have felt Adderall was more necessary than steroids for success is because people may believe intelligence is less malleable than athletic ability. This view of intelligence might have led the students in this study to believe that taking Adderall would increase intellectual capacity," said Dodge. "This research can help mold future prevention efforts around off-label prescription stimulant use in the academic world."

The American Psychological Association, in Washington, D.C., is the largest scientific and professional organization representing psychology in the United States and is the world's largest association of psychologists. APA's membership includes more than 137,000 researchers, educators, clinicians, consultants and students. Through its divisions in 54 subfields of psychology and affiliations with 60 state, territorial and Canadian provincial associations, APA works to advance psychology as a science, as a profession and as a means of promoting health, education and human welfare.

HTC Droid Incredible 4G LTE for Verizon hands-on at CTIA 2012 (update: video)

Image

This handset didn't surprise anyone when it was officially announced at CTIA Wireless 2012, but we're still happy to spend time with the HTC Droid Incredible 4G LTE for Verizon Wireless regardless. After catching enough glimpses of the smartphone over the past few months, we already had a good idea of what to expect: Big Red's latest LTE device will have Ice Cream Sandwich dressed in Sense 4, a 4-inch Super LCD qHD panel, a 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 (Krait), 1,700mAh user-removable battery, microSD support and an 8MP BSI f/2.2 camera with a 28mm lens.

If you're familiar with either the OG HTC Droid Incredible or its sequel, you'll instantly recognize the trusty hump on the back of the third iteration -- Verizon and HTC haven't strayed too far from the design formula here. Aside from the Sense 4 firmware hiding inside the phone, the Incredible 4G LTE has little in common with its cousins, the One X and One S. Frankly, we're still left pondering if the carrier will come out with a version of its own, since we've seen the other three national powers get a high-profile device from the Taiwanese manufacturer.

We had a very similar feeling when holding the new Incredible, one easily related to how we felt with its predecessors. It's quite light, and it actually feels thinner than it really is. All in all, the phone is very comfortable to hold, and from our few minutes of using it, it seemed to be rather smooth. Naturally, as we expected, Verizon reps warned us that it's running on preliminary firmware at the moment, so we don't take a lot of stock in its performance, good or bad. All in all, it's exactly how we thought it would be -- a refreshed version of the Incredible 2, with a much better processor and a few other notable bumps in specs. Head below to check out a few images of Verizon's newest darling.

Update: Our hands-on video is now live after the break.

?

Here are the questions I posed, and selected discussion around each question.

Q1: Every year we hear ?it?s the year of mobile.? How many SMBs actually use mobile devices in business? #SMBchat

95 percent of mobile workers now have smartphones, up from 85 percent in 2010 (2011 iPass Report) ? @KPHaley

Not only are people using mobile for work, but it?s all mixed up with their personal stuff #SMBchat -?@KPHaley

I use my mobile every day for business (internet mktg). -?@robert_brady

At our organization all of upper management and those that travel often use Blackberry (about 50 total) ? @Ileane

With smartphone penetration rates growing small business do not escape the trend. ? @fjfonseca

Q2: What are the top uses of mobile devices by small businesses? #SMBchat

Symantec research shows email as top use for SMBs and 54% use line-of-business applications on mobile devices ? @SymantecEMM

A line of business application for example is a financial reporting tool or a real estate listings application. @SymantecEMM

Don?t forget technologies like Square that empower the SB?s owner to use mobile. ? @fjfonseca

Many #smallbusiness owners have asked us to create an app to use their devices to scan inventory ^Matt ??@inFlowInventory

Q3: What is the biggest security issue when it comes to small-business mobile usage? #SMBchat

96% of lost phones had the data accessed in our study. Even those returned. ? @KPHaley

Lost or stolen, once out of the user?s hands a phone must be considered breached. http://t.co/dmnewP7w ?? @KPHaley

315 new mobile vulnerabilities found in 2011. 90% increase. Opportunity for bad guys is there. ? @KPHaley

My guess is the ?human factor,? leaving the mobile phone, no keyboard / PIN lock. ?? @Lyceum

Lost phones are actually the biggest risk for SMBs: http://bit.ly/IjpInI ? @KPHaley

Device loss, data leakage, unauthorized access to corporate resources and malware infection are all big security issues. ? ?@KPHaley

Here is a list I put together for protecting your phone. ?http://t.co/hpjPTfai ?? ?@KPHaley

Take a look at this Symantec blogpost on wardriving. Mobile devices, PCs are vulnerable attack http://t.co/Tb5c19P1 ? @SymantecEMM

Connect to encryption enabled wifi networks or only use applications that transmit via HTTPS ???RT @SymantecEMM @TJMcCue

If you are really dealing with sensitive data, use a VPN. Ask your geek friend to set it up. ? @fjfonseca

Remote wipe or encryption, pick the one that works for you. Protect the data on your mobile device. ? @KPHaley

Phishing is also harder to detect on smart phones because of the smaller screens.? @KPHaley

Q4: Which presents the bigger security risk to a company: ?a mobile device or a PC? Why? #SMBchat

Mobile devices are easier to lose and when discovered, curiosity can lead to violation of personal privacy: http://bit.ly/IjpInI ? @SymantecEMM

Malware for mobile devices is less common than malware targeting PCs, however we?re seeing more Trojanized apps ? ?@SymantecEMM

Both. Need to be secure and protected ??@txtnlrn

Don?t use the same password for different accounts, services. #StaySafe ?? @TJMcCue RT @fjfonseca

Locally stored data isn?t as dangerous as opening portal to data in cloud. Must be just as careful w mobile as PC ?? @Walter Paley

#Smbchat?tonight is a course in security ? follow?on Twitter and save your biz from hackers ? @RamonRay

Q5: In terms of mobile risk, what are the main consequences (losses)? #SMBchat

Losses stem from direct financial expenses, loss of data, and damage to brand or loss of customer trust http://bit.ly/K3LhyP ? @KPHaley

This one blows my mind: SMBs averaged $126,000 of loss in the past year due to mobile computing issues http://bit.ly/K3LhyP ?? @KPHaley

18% of all targeted attacks are directed at businesses with < 250 employees. http://t.co/ldE4bzLr ?? @SymantecEMM

Q6: Which is more likely: having your mobile device hacked into or losing it and someone accessing private info?#SMBchat

I would guess losing it and someone accessing private info. So many people lose their phones. ? @LisaSchulteis

Both are risks. Only 50% of smartphone finders contacted the owner in our smartphone experiment http://bit.ly/IjpInI ? @SymantecEMM

This stat is important, 18% of all targeted attacks are directed at businesses with 250 or fewer employees. http://bit.ly/ITfzSq ? @SymantecEMM

Not everyone can hack a phone. Everyone has the skills to steal one. ? @KPHaley

People are basically good. Just insanely curious. Don?t get down on humanity because of http://t.co/dmnewP7w ?? ?@KPHaley

I have heard stories about how the police have found the criminals by GPS location and ?find my phone? app. ? @Lyceum

Find my phone is a good example. If you lose your phone you know you can secure your data. ? @SymantecEMM @Lyceum

Because regular users keep thinking ?it only happens to the others? until it happens to them. ??@fjfonseca @Mayura

We have the tech now to secure mobile data, so let?s leverage these tools to the max!?#CoIT??>>> I agree there ?? ?@AdrienneSmith40 ?RT @Nukona_Walt

Q7: What can small businesses do today to reduce risk in mobile computing? #SMBchat

And this will sound familiar: Keep security software up-to-date; encrypt data going to and from the device. ? @KPHaley

Save yourself a lot of grief: Only use app marketplaces hosted by well-known and legitimate vendors http://bit.ly/IqJmSB ?? @KPHaley

Good start: Enforce policies for acceptable use, screen lock, passwords, and application downloads for all users. ?? ?@KPHaley

Protect mobile devices with Android Lock passwords and use Apps that can wipe a phone/tablet clean if lost or stolen ? @VernessaTaylor RT @jbrath

Pick a vendor that manages the updates for you. Not your job to remember to update. ? @KPHaley

For some current statistics on the State of Mobility, download:? http://bit.ly/IIDeHh

Note: ?to make the recap easier to read, tweets above have been edited to remove redundant information, such as hashtags and answer numbers. ?Obvious misspellings and broken links also were fixed. ?Tweets may be slightly out of order, for better readability. The above represents only a small portion of the tweets ? it is intended to cover key highlights for reader convenience, not serve as a full transcript of the chat.

(AP Photo/Remy de la Mauviniere, Thibault Camus)

(AP) ? When Nicolas Sarkozy bounded up the steps of France's presidential palace in jogging shorts and shoes on his first day in office five years ago, many French instantly sensed they were in for something new.

In a country where King Louis XIV's phrase "L'Etat, c'est moi" ? "I am the state" ? resonated for later heads of state, the message from Sarkozy was clear: Tradition-bound France needed a self-image makeover.

His idea of change wasn't exactly what many French had in mind.

Sarkozy's meticulously built political career all but collapsed Sunday, after he lost to Francois Hollande, an unassuming and bespectacled Socialist, in France's presidential run-off. Sarkozy becomes the first French one-term president since Valery Giscard d'Estaing lost his re-election bid in 1981.

Sarkozy's inauguration-day jog, which conveyed youthful vigor, ultimately epitomized what many French came to see as jejune, self-centered antics unbefitting of a president at a time when economic troubles and persistently high joblessness were on most minds.

"I take full responsibility for this defeat," he said after the results came out Sunday night.

Some political brethren grumbled that Sarkozy should have officially jumped into his re-election race earlier, instead of clinging to his mantle as head of state until February. Other pundits suggested that less controversial conservatives such as Prime Minister Francois Fillon or Foreign Minister Alain Juppe would have had a better shot at beating Hollande than Sarkozy did.

A frank-speaking, energetic and media-savvy former interior minister, Sarkozy won the presidency in 2007 over Segolene Royal ? Hollande's former partner, and mother of his four children ? with an unlikely campaign built on promises of "rupture" from the policies of Jacques Chirac, his fellow conservative and former mentor.

It was personal style, many pollsters said, that largely did in Sarkozy. After his 2007 victory speech on Place de la Concorde, Sarkozy sped over to one of the ritziest restaurants on the Champs-Elysees to celebrate; then he jetted off to the yacht of a tycoon friend in the Mediterranean. Critics pounced on the showiness.

A lackluster economy and his inability to make good on his 2007 race promises to shrink persistently high joblessness didn't help. In the fourth quarter of 2011, France's unemployment rate was nearly 10 percent. In January, S&P downgraded France's state debt rating from its top tier, delivering a blow to his image as financial-manager-in-chief.

Sarkozy sought to cast himself as powerless: On the 2012 campaign trail, he repeatedly pointed to Europe's financial crisis ? in places like Italy and Greece ? that endangered the euro zone. He sought to cast himself as a "ship captain whose boat was in a full storm."

In many ways, Sarkozy was an anomaly as France's president.

He had a foreign-sounding surname. He didn't attend the most elite French university for public servants. He seemed to relish in chucking out the regal niceties of the presidency. His off-the-cuff remarks, like calling a somewhat belligerent passer-by at a Paris farm fair "a poor jerk," got him in trouble.

Sarkozy reportedly once said he'd foreseen himself more as a prime minister ? whose job is the day-to-day running of the government, requiring a lot of energy ? than head of state, whose traditional role is about statecraft.

But backed by a strong majority of his conservative UMP party in the National Assembly, and by force of personality, Sarkozy commandeered the reins of power. His prime minister, Francois Fillon, was seen as his executor.

In his first year in office, Sarkozy's team rammed through changes like a cap on income taxes for the wealthiest, seen by critics as a sop to the uber-rich friends who backed his candidacy and were in his inner circle from his years as mayor of the wealthy Paris suburb of Neuilly-sur-Seine.

Other reforms came hard, in the face of protest.

Sarkozy's team wrote into law minimum-service requirements during France's often-crippling labor strikes. It raised the retirement age to 62, from 60, in the face of protests. It pushed through complex reforms to cut costs in a creaky university system, and students protested in the streets by the thousands.

He reduced payroll taxes on overtime pay, and cut the bureaucracy by refusing to replace one of every two retiring state workers.

In the history books, Sarkozy's impact may well be more notable for what he accomplished abroad than at home: Under France's presidency of the European Union in 2008, he mediated between Russia and Georgia during their brief war; the following year, he replaced France in NATO's integrated command after a 43-year absence.

Politically, he was a mix.

Sarkozy favors free markets but has been unafraid to defend French business. He long took pride in his moniker as "Sarko the American" ? and has rebuilt ties both with the United States and Israel. He led France into a leadership role in a NATO-backed revolution in Libya that toppled Moammar Gadhafi, and has taken a tough line on nuclear-minded Iran. Along with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, he helped craft a hard-won European fiscal treaty meant to stem the continent's debt crisis.

As interior minister, Sarkozy was generally successful as a crime-fighter. But his tough talk on youth in immigrant-heavy housing projects also often infuriated many French citizens whose families hail from former French colonies in north and sub-Saharan Africa.

Yet as interior minister, he helped create the country's largest confederation of Muslim groups, the CFCM, and supported a form of French-styled "affirmative action" ? before he abandoned it under pressure in his conservative political camp which saw preferential treatment as against France's color-blind values.

Born on Jan. 28, 1955, Nicolas Paul Stephane Sarkozy de Nagy-Bocsa grew up in a middle-class home in Paris, the second of three sons born of a half-Jewish French mother and an aristocratic Hungarian emigre father who fled Communism after World War II.

Sarkozy is the first French president to divorce and remarry while in office. He is the father of three sons and, as of last year, a daughter with former supermodel Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, his third wife.

Before this election, Sarkozy said he would quit politics if he lost.

"A new epoch is opening," he said Sunday night, adding he'd become a citizen "like you." He gave no specifics about his plans.

Sarkozy got a searing taste of defeat 13 years ago, after he headed a center-right list of candidates for European parliamentary elections, and the loss sent him into retreat from national politics.

"I recognize failure. I take full responsibility. I am ready to learn the consequences," he wrote in his 2001 book "Libre" ("Free") of that campaign in 1999, during which he had assumed leadership only six weeks before the vote. "And in the situation I find myself in this spring evening," he wrote, remembering the loss, "being, remaining, and being considered dignified is my only ambition."

'Avengers' Smashes Box-Office Records: Experts Weigh In

'We are really in uncharted territory now with an opening like this,' one box-office expert tells MTV News.
By Fallon Prinzivalli

It's safe to say that everyone expected Marvel's "The Avengers" to smash the box office when it opened in U.S. theaters this weekend, but no one could foresee just how many records it would break.

According to Deadline Hollywood, the Joss Whedon-directed film grossed more than $207 million domestically this weekend, blasting away the "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2" record of $169 million. The film now also holds the #1 spot for highest Saturday gross of all time with a whopping $69.7 million made in a single day.

"We are really in uncharted territory now with an opening like this," Phil Contrino of BoxOffice.com told MTV News.

With "Avengers" exceeding fan and critic expectations, is the film poised to break any other records? Box Office Guru editor Gitesh Pandya predicts some hefty numbers. "It also broke the speed record for hitting $200 million, doing it in a mere three days, beating a trio of past hits that did it in five days," he said. "And I project it will become the fastest film in history to smash the $1 billion global box-office mark, doing it in about 20 days or so. 'Avengers' just might end up becoming the highest-grossing non-James Cameron film ever."

Exhibitor Relations' Jeff Bock agrees, saying, "[It] will likely take down many of 'The Dark Knight' and 'Deathly Hallows, Part 2' [records], including best first-week gross and fastest to $300 million."

But with such huge numbers in the beginning, there's a chance the film could drastically drop in weeks to come. "I don't think it can possibly manage to drop only 55-60 percent like most summer blockbusters, but if it does then it could very well challenge the $533.3 million domestic gross of 'The Dark Knight,' " Contrino said. "I don't think it will catch 'Titanic' or 'Avatar' domestically, but I wouldn't completely rule it out either. It all depends on how much repeat business it gets."

Pandya agrees that "Avengers" will have a sizable drop in its second weekend in theaters. "We won't see 'Titanic' or 'Avatar'-type legs here, but a final domestic gross of more than $450 million seems likely."

Bock is a little more optimistic, putting the overall domestic tally at $500 million. "As reviews have been through the roof, it will definitely benefit from repeat viewings," he said. " 'The Avengers' success is now the model by which all comic book franchises will now be judged. This certainly played out like a sequel, because it was built like one. In fact, this was a super-sequel arriving with the most built-in buzz in the history of modern-day cinema."

Contrino credits the buzz to Disney's incredible campaign to market the film. "They combined traditional marketing — TV spots, trailers — with plenty of outreach on Facebook and Twitter. Marketers will be studying this for years to come."

But marketing departments won't be the only teams studying up on Disney and Marvel's success. Bock believes DC Comics should be taking some notes. "Marvel maneuvered their characters like Bobby Fischer moved chess pieces — always thinking of the next move," he said.

"This was Marvel's master plan from the beginning and it turned into a master class. If DC can eventually get all their universe straightened out, there is no reason a Justice League movie couldn't blow up the box office like Marvel's 'Avengers' did."

Pandya agrees, crediting the success in part to the directors. "Other studios should learn to trust big franchises in the hands of talented directors and to keep fans engaged throughout the process so they feel like they are part of the team," he said. "Give audiences a solid piece of entertainment and they will reward you back with huge bags of cash."

Scientists aim to kill lung tumors

Saturday, May 5, 2012

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death throughout the world. Standard treatment methods do not usually result in long-term recovery. In addition to the proliferation of the tumour cells, the growth of blood vessels controls tumors development. The blood vessel growth is controlled by several signalling molecules. Scientists from the Max Planck Institute for Heart and Lung Research in Bad Nauheim and Justus Liebig University Giessen have discovered a molecule that plays a key role in this process. They succeeded in reducing tumour growth in their experiments by blocking the phosphodiesterase PDE4.

Lung cancer mainly affects smokers; however the disease can also be caused by contact with carcinogenic substances like asbestos. Chemotherapy or radiotherapy often prove insufficient in treating the disease. Hence, scientists are engaged in an intensive search for ways of halting the growth of lung tumours. The blood vessels that supply the tumour with nutrients offer a potential point of attack.

New blood vessels form to ensure an adequate supply of nutrients to the growing tumour. The growing tissue is immediately penetrated by blood vessels. The growth of the blood vessels is regulated by the tumour cells using a complex signal cascade, which is triggered initially by a low oxygen content (hypoxia) in the tumour tissue. "This state, which is known as hypoxia prompts the activation of around 100 genes in the tumour cells," explains Rajkumar Savai, research group leader at the Max Planck institute. "In addition to the growth of blood vessels, hypoxia also stimulates the proliferation of lung cancer cells." Three molecules play a particularly important role in this process. The activation of the genes at the beginning of the cascade is triggered by the transcription factor HIF and a messenger molecule, cAMP, is involved again at the end of the cascade. The researchers examined the third molecule that acts as a link between these two molecules in detail.

The molecule in question is a phosphodiesterase, PDE4. The scientists from Bad Nauheim and Giessen were able to demonstrate in their study that various sections of PDE4 have binding sites for HIF.

The researchers then tested the influence of a PDE4 blockade on the cells from ten different cell lines, which are characteristic of around 80 percent of lung cancers, in the laboratory. The rate of cell division in the cells treated with a PDE4 inhibitor was significantly lower and the HIF level also declined as a result.

The effect in the tumour bearing mice was particularly obvious. To observe this, the Max Planck researchers implanted a human tumour cell line under the skin of nude mice and treated the animals with the phosphodiesterase 4 inhibitor.

Tumour growth in these animals declined by around 50 percent. "Our microscopic analysis revealed that the blood vessel growth in the tumours of the mice that had been treated with the inhibitor was significantly reduced. We also observed indicators of decelerated cell division in the tumour cells. Overall, the tumour growth was strongly curbed."

Werner Seeger, Director of the MPI and Medical Director of the JLU University Hospital Giessen, reports: "We were able to show that PDE4 plays an important regulation function in cell division in lung tumours and in the development of blood vessels in cancer. Therefore, we hope that we have found a starting point for the development of a treatment here." In the view of tumour specialist Friedrich Grimminger, Chairman of the Department of Medical Oncology in Giessen, it may be possible in future to combine the inhibition of PDE4 with traditional radiotherapy or chemotherapy. In this way, the effect of the traditional treatment measures could be reinforced and patient prognoses may improve as a result. However, further laboratory studies are required before clinical tests can be carried out.

US airstrike kills senior al-Qaida leader in Yemen

SANAA, Yemen (AP) ? An airstrike Sunday killed a top al-Qaida leader on the FBI's most wanted list for his role in the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole warship, Yemeni officials said. The drone attack was carried out by the CIA, U.S. officials said.

Fahd al-Quso was hit by a missile as he stepped out of his vehicle, along with another al-Qaida operative in the southern Shabwa province, Yemeni military officials said. They were speaking on condition of anonymity in accordance with military regulations.

The drone strike that killed Quso was carried out by the CIA, after an extended surveillance operation by the CIA and U.S. military, two U.S. officials said. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

The strike was authorized by the Yemeni government, which then made the announcement after the operation was complete, the officials said, part of the U.S. strategy to give the host government more public ownership of the operation being carried out on Yemeni soil.

The airstrike came as the U.S. and Yemen cooperate in a battle against al-Qaida in southern Yemen.

Al-Quso, 37, was on the FBI's most wanted list, with a $5 million reward for information leading to his capture. He was indicted in the U.S. for his role in the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole in the harbor of Aden, Yemen, in which 17 American sailors were killed and 39 injured.

He served more than five years in a Yemeni prison for his role in the attack and was released in 2007. He briefly escaped prison in 2003 but later turned himself in to serve the rest of his sentence.

A telephone text message claiming to be from al-Qaida's media arm confirmed al-Quso was killed in the strike.

Al-Quso was also one of the most senior al-Qaida leaders publicly linked to the 2009 Christmas airliner attack. He allegedly met with the suspected Nigerian bomber, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, in Yemen before he left on his way to execute his failed attack over Detroit with a bomb concealed in his underwear.

In December 2010, al-Quso was designated a global terrorist by the State Department, an indication that his role in al-Qaida's Yemen offshoot, al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, had grown more prominent.

Local Yemeni official Abu Bakr bin Farid and the Yemeni Embassy in Washington confirmed al-Quso was killed in Rafd, a remote mountain valley in Shabwa. It is the area where many al-Qaida leaders are believed to have taken cover, including the U.S.-born cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, who was killed in a U.S. airstrike in Yemen last year.

Yemeni government officials reported that al-Quso and al-Awlaki were killed in an airstrike in 2009 in Rafd, but they both resurfaced alive.

Al-Quso was known for his ability to move in disguise. He was from the same tribe as al-Awlaki, and local tribesmen said he was a close aide. He studied ultraconservative Salafi Islam as a teenager in northern Yemen, then returned home to learn welding.

The White House and the State Department had no immediate comment.

Yemen's government has been waging an offensive on al-Qaida militants, who have taken advantage of the country's political turmoil over the last year to expand their hold in the south.

The new Yemeni president has promised improved cooperation with the U.S. to combat the militants. On Saturday, he said the fight against al-Qaida is in its early stages.

Al-Quso's association with al-Qaida dated back more than a decade, when he met with Osama bin Laden in Afghanistan. Bin Laden allegedly told him to "eliminate the infidels from the Arabian Peninsula."

From there he rose through the ranks. He was assigned in Aden to videotape the 1998 suicide bombing of the USS Cole, but he fell asleep.

Despite the lapse, the local leader, Nasser al-Wahishi, declared him the regional leader in Aden. He was also believed to have played a prominent role in al-Qaida's attack and capture last year of Zinjibar, the capital of Abyan province.

Government troops are trying to drive al-Qaida out of Zinjibar.

The most, and least safe states in America

AP

Violent crime weighs heavily on the economy. Financial burdens include static costs, such as medical judicial costs, as well as dynamic costs, such as lost productivity arising from injuries and incarceration.

By Charles B. Stockdale and Michael B. Sauter, 24/7 Wall St.

The United States is more peaceful now than at any time in the past 20 years. Nevertheless, violence still cost the economy at least $460 billion in 2010, through a combination of lost productivity and direct costs, according to a new report published by the Institute for Economics and Peace. 24/7 Wall St. analyzed the report in order to identify the most and least peaceful states, as well as how much they spend on violence.

Louisiana, which is the least peaceful state, has the highest rate of homicide. Maine is the most peaceful state and has the lowest rate of violent crime.

Peace, according to the Institute for Economics and Peace,?is a combination of the absence of violence and the institutions required to address it. In an interview with 24/7 Wall St., chairman and founder of the IEP, Steve Killelea explained, ?In perfect states, there?d be no crime, therefore you?d have no need for police, nor would you lock anyone up.?

The report considers five categories -- separated into three groups -- to calculate the United States Peace Index for 2011. The first group includes rates of violent crimes such as robbery and aggravated assault, as well as the rates of homicide in each state. The second group relates to the institutions used to prevent violence and is measured by the number of police per capita and the number of incarcerated residents per capita. The third includes the availability of small arms.

Violent crime weighs heavily on the economy. Financial burdens include static costs, such as medical judicial costs, as well as dynamic costs, such as lost productivity arising from injuries and incarceration. Medical costs resulting from assault cost the U.S. nearly $38 billion in 2010. Costs arising from homicides totaled more than $91 million.

While the causes of violence are not made clear, IEP?s analysis suggests a relationship between socioeconomic factors and violence. ?I don?t think there?s a single silver bullet which creates peace,? Killelea told 24/7. ?I think it?s multi-dimensional and really complex. So, on that basis, we?ve pulled out the correlations.? Rather than finding the causes, Killelea explained, the IEP tried to identify environments that suggest high violence.

To do this, the Institute for Economics and Peace considered 42 additional sets of data in five categories -- education, health, economic opportunity, civics and demographics, community and social capital -- to identify factors that may cause, be caused by or correlated with violence and high levels of enforcement.

24/7 Wall St.: America's most miserable states

After examining these data sets, 24/7 Wall St. identified 17 factors that were highly correlated with the measures of peace, although it is unclear as to the causal relationship between the two -- if any. Of those 17 factors, we considered 10 that appeared to be the most directly related to the presence of violence and the methods states use to maintain law and order.

In the category of economics, absolute poverty rates appear to be correlated with violent conditions. Nine of the 10 most peaceful states were among the 20 with the lowest poverty rates. On the other hand, six of the 10 least peaceful were among the 10 poorest states.

A number of education-related metrics correlate strongly with how peaceful the states are. According to Killelea, ?it is not so much the quality of education that matters for peace, but that states keep children in school and off the streets.?

The strongest correlation with peace among the education data is the share of a state?s population with at least a high school diploma. In Texas, which is among the least peaceful states, just over 80 percent have at least a high school diploma -- the country?s lowest rate. Minnesota?s rate of nearly 92 percent is the country?s second highest. That state is also one of the most peaceful.

24/7 Wall St. used the Institute for Economics and Peace?s second annual study, The United States Peace Index, to identify the 10 most and least peaceful states in the country. The level of peacefulness in each state was based on five weighted metrics, including violent crime, homicide, the presence of police officers and the number of incarcerations per capita. The least-weighted of these was the availability of small arms.

Using IEP?s original sources, 24/7 Wall St. reproduced state data for 10 of the factors the report determined to have the strongest correlations nationally to the five measures of peace. These were teenage birth rates, teenage death rates, life expectancy at birth, percentage of people without health insurance, percentage of people with at least a high school degree, labor force participation, basic access to things needed for well-being, percentage of children in single parent families, poverty rate and income inequality -- measured by the Gini coefficient.

America?s most peaceful states?

1. Maine

  • Violent crimes (excluding murder) per 100,000: 120.2 (the least)
  • Murders per 100,000: 1.8 (tied for seventh least)
  • Incarceration rate per 100,000: 148 (the least)
  • Police per 100,000: 213.9 (the least)
  • Basic access: 84.0 (16th highest)
  • Total cost of violence: $801 million

Maine is the most peaceful state in the country, as it has been since 2000. The state has the lowest rate of violent crime excluding murder. It averages 120 violent crimes per 100,000, while Nevada, the state with the most crimes, averages 654. It also has the lowest incarceration rate, effectively eight times lower than Louisiana?s, or the least peaceful state. In addition, Maine has the lowest rate of police employees among its population -- over half that of New Jersey.

24/7 Wall St.: America's most corrupt states

2. Vermont

  • Violent crimes (excluding murder) per 100,000: 129.1 (second least)
  • Murders per 100,000: 1.1 (second least)
  • Incarceration rate per 100,000: 265 (ninth least)
  • Police per 100,000: 414.8 (fourth most)
  • Basic access: 84.1 (15th highest)
  • Total cost of violence: $447 million

Vermont is one of the most peaceful states in the country, with just 129.1 violent crimes and 1.1 murders per 100,000 people. The state is near the top for nearly every major indicator that the Peace Project has identified as being correlated with a low rate of violence and a high level of peace. The Green Mountain State is among the top 10 in the country for graduation rates, labor participation, and health insurance coverage. It also has the third-lowest rate of teen births in the country at 21.3 percent.

3. New Hampshire

  • Violent crimes (excluding murder) per 100,000: 166.0 (third least)
  • Murders per 100,000: 1.0 (the least)
  • Incarceration rate per 100,000: 209 (fifth least)
  • Police per 100,000: 288.6 (16th least)
  • Basic access: 85.4 (fifth highest)
  • Total cost of violence: $952 million

New Hampshire?s high level of peace may be the result of its sound economic conditions. Only 8.1 percent of state residents are living in poverty -- the lowest rate in the country. It also has one of the lowest rates of income inequality. Additionally, New Hampshire has the lowest rate of homicide in the country, the third-lowest rate of other violent crimes and the fifth-lowest incarceration rate. New Hampshire also has a 91.5 percent high school graduation rate -- the fourth-highest -- and the lowest rate of births among teenagers.

America?s least peaceful states

1. Louisiana

  • Violent crimes (excluding murder) per 100,000: 537.8 (eighth most)
  • Murders per 100,000: 11.2 (the most)
  • Incarceration rate per 100,000: 867 (the most)
  • Police per 100,000: 542.8 (the most)
  • Basic access: 79.2 (fifth lowest)
  • Total cost of violence: $9.82 billion

Of the five metrics used to generate the Peace Index, Louisiana received the absolute worst score in all but two of them. The state has the eighth-worst violent crime rate and the fourth-worst rate of gun suicides. The state has the highest levels of both police per capita and incarceration. The state?s 867 prisoners per 100,000 people is well more than the next-worst state, Mississippi, which has 686 prisoners per 100,000. The state?s murder rate is what truly sets it apart as the least peaceful in the country. Louisiana?s homicide rate in 2010 was 11.2 per 100,000 residents. The next-worst state, Maryland, had 7.4 murders per 100,000 people. Louisiana was also among the worst 10 states for each of the 10 categories shown to have a high level of correlation with violence.

2. Tennessee

  • Violent crimes (excluding murder) per 100,000: 607.7 (fourth most)
  • Murders per 100,000: 5.6 (12th most)
  • Incarceration rate per 100,000: 432 (22nd most)
  • Police per 100,000: 404.8 (sixth most)
  • Basic access: 81.0 (17th lowest)
  • Total cost of violence: $11.67 billion

Tennessee is the second-least peaceful state in the country, and has in fact gotten worse since 1991. Additionally, the Nashville-Davidson-Murfreesboro-Franklin metropolitan area is among the worst metro areas for peace. The state is one of the most violent, with nearly 608 violent crimes committed per 100,000 residents in 2010. The state also has among the largest relative number of police employees -- nearly 405 per 100,000 people. Tennessee also has one of the largest rates of children living in single parent households, one of the highest poverty rates, one of the lowest rates of income inequality and one of the highest rates of births among teenagers.

3. Nevada

  • Violent crimes (excluding murder) per 100,000: 654.7 (the most)
  • Murders per 100,000: 5.9 (eighth most)
  • Incarceration rate per 100,000: 472 (13th most)
  • Police per 100,000: 365.6 (13th most)
  • Basic access: 78.0 (second lowest)
  • Total cost of violence: $5.47 billion

Many of the factors that normally correspond with a high rate of violence are not present in Nevada. The state is actually in the top 50 percent for poverty rate, income equality, and labor force participation. On the other hand, the state has a high teen birth rate and the second-highest percentage of its population without health insurance. Its citizens also have, according to Gallup, the second-worst access to basic necessities in the country. The state has the highest violent crime rate in the country, with 654.7 per every 100,000 residents recorded in 2010.

Slumping Pujols angry about getting day off

Associated Press Sports

updated 9:26 p.m. ET May 5, 2012

Albert Pujols, stumbling through the longest home run drought of his 12-year career, was not in the Los Angeles Angels' starting lineup Saturday for the first time this season.

And the three-time NL MVP wasn't happy about it. When a group of reporters approached his locker, Pujols said: "Go ask the manager, not me, guys. I don't make the lineup."

Mark Trumbo, who moved from first base to playing third and in the outfield after the Angels signed Pujols, started at his original position Saturday night against the Toronto Blue Jays. It gave Pujols, the Angels' No. 3 hitter, a chance to contemplate his .194 batting average and the five RBIs he's had through his first 27 games in the AL.

"It's good that he has a day off. He knows it. But I know he doesn't want to be out of the lineup," said Angels right fielder Torii Hunter, who didn't hit a home run in his first 18 games and then homered in four of his next five.

"Albert shouldn't be happy about it. He's a competitor, man. He's just like me. I don't want to be out of the lineup. I wouldn't be happy about it, but I know it would probably be beneficial. Sometimes you just need a mental break. You need to take a breather, take a step back and just observe and not pick up a bat. This gives him a chance to clear his lead, relax, crack a joke or two on the bench, smile, laugh ... It's going to be a lot of fun."

Manager Mike Scioscia informed the 32-year-old slugger on Friday night that he was going to rest him. Pujols, in the first year of a 10-year, $240 million contract, has gone a career-worst 33 games and 137 at-bats without a home run since late last season.

"I think everybody needs a day, no matter who you are or what the situation is," Angels outfielder Vernon Wells said. "You need days off, not only physically but just mentally."

Pujols is in a 2-for-27 rut and had just one RBI over his last 18 games. Last year, he missed what would have been his 11th straight 100-RBI season by just one.

"Sometimes you're grinding, and nobody grinds harder than Albert," Scioscia said. "I think he's frustrated just from the fact that he knows there's a lot he feels that he can contribute. Sometimes when you're trying to find something and you're pounding your head against the wall, you need to just get off that treadmill for a second and get back on the next day."

Pujols spoke at length about his slump Friday night after going 0 for 4 in the Angels' second straight shutout loss to the Blue Jays.

"I can't get myself down, because that's not who I am," he said. "I'm a leader in this clubhouse, just like I was in St. Louis. And when you're struggling around this time of the year, this is when the ballclub really needs their leader to step up. Just because I'm struggling the way I am, it's nobody's fault. I just need to stick with the same attitude.

"I've been making some adjustments, and before you know it, I'll be swinging the bat the way I know how to swing the bat," said Pujols, who last October joined Babe Ruth and Reggie Jackson as the only players to hit three home runs in a World Series game.

Pujols' longest home run drought prior to this was in 2011, when he came up empty in 27 straight games and 105 at-bats. Previously, his longest drought at the start of a season was in 2008, when he failed to homer in his first eight games and 27 at-bats. He ended that season with 37.

The 32-year-old first baseman averaged 40.5 home runs during his 11 seasons with the Cardinals - including a career-best 49 in 2006 - and is the only player in major league history to hit 30 or more homers in each of his first 11 years in the bigs.

"He's going to be fine," said Toronto right fielder Jose Bautista, a two-time AL home run champ who outhomered Pujols 97-79 over the previous two seasons. "He's one of the best hitters of this generation, so I'm not too worried about him. He's going to pick it up at some point, and at the end of the year, his numbers are going to be just fine."

(AP) ? Hulk, smash.

That's what Captain America tells the Incredible Hulk to do in "The Avengers," and that's what the Marvel Comics superhero mash-up did at the box office, smashing the domestic revenue record with a $200.3 million debut.

It's by far the biggest opening ever, shooting past the previous record of $169.2 million for the debut of last year's "Harry Potter" finale.

"The Avengers" added $151.5 million overseas over the weekend to bring its total to $441.5 million since it began opening internationally a week earlier.

That raised the film's worldwide haul to $641.8 million in barely a week and a half, more than its Marvel superhero forerunners "Iron Man," ''Iron Man 2," ''Thor" and "Captain America" took in during their entire runs.

If distributor Disney's domestic estimate Sunday holds when the final weekend count is released Monday, "The Avengers" would be the first movie ever to haul in $200 million in a single weekend.

A $200 million total for every movie in release is considered a great weekend for the business as a whole, so "The Avengers" redefines the standards for a blockbuster debut.

"If 'The Avengers' is any indication, we're going to see a leap rather than a gentle little nudge into new territory, and the lineup is there to justify it going forward," said Greg Foster, chairman and president of the huge-screen IMAX cinema chain.

Crowds were so anxious to see the film on IMAX's giant screens that Foster said the company had only one problem: it ran out of seats to sell.

Hollywood launched a potentially record-shattering summer with a vengeance, "The Avengers" landing as just the first of three huge superhero tales that highlight a lineup filled with other blockbusters in the making.

"The Amazing Spider-Man" follows on July 3 and "The Dark Knight Rises" wraps up the current Batman series on July 20.

Until the "Harry Potter" finale, 2008's "The Dark Knight" had held the revenue record with a $158.4 million debut. Before that, the record-holder was 2007's "Spider-Man 3" with $151.1 million.

So anticipation for those two films could rival that of "The Avengers."

Along with the superhero films, Hollywood's summer lineup includes the action tales "Men in Black 3," ''G.I. Joe: Retaliation," ''Battleship," ''Total Recall" and "Prometheus," director Ridley Scott's return to the sci-fi territory of his horror hit "Alien."

Big family fare includes the animated adventures "Brave," from "Toy Story" creator Pixar Animation, and the sequels "Ice Age: Continental Drift" and "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted."

The comedy lineup features Adam Sandler's "That's My Boy," Will Ferrell's "The Campaign" and Sacha Baron Cohen's "The Dictator."
